A land unknown to the world, a land by itself on the edge of the earth, a land inhabited by unknown people, such was Australia before the British explorer Captain James Cook explored it and claimed it for England's King George III. England made immediate good use of this new mysterious land. They shipped ships and ships full of convicts to the land down under to build settlements and ports for passing ships. A failure at first due to the infertile land and the unfamiliar climate, the colony and settlement soon boomed to become industrialized and became cities. Liberated from Great Britain on January 1 1901, Australia boomed as a country participating in WWI and WWII. Originating as a continent for convicts and passing ships, Australia is now one of the most prosperous countries on the planet.
