Friday, July 19                          Christchurch, New Zealand                               Day 20

This morning, our bus took us to a loading dock where we boarded the ferry to take up to the South Island.   The ferry took us through the Cook Straight and it was about a 3-4 hour ferry ride.  The water was quite choppy because of heavy winds and it was also raining so the ferry rocked back and forth a portion of the way.  Aboard the ferry, we played UNO, Spades, wrote in our journals, and some just slept. Katherine and I also went to the shop on the ship to buy our friend Katrina some birthday presents such as candy and a present bag since it was her birthday in a few days.   After we got off the ferry, we took a bus ride, which landed us in Christchurch.  Later that night, we ate at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve; it was a buffet, and afterwards we visited the native birds of New Zealand, the Kiwi.  They are nocturnal animals that are easily scared by light.
